THE LAST GREAT RACE
The Last Great Race on Earth in this edition of The Christian Sportsman is a fascinating cover article to inspire outdoorsmen who are on their own personal quest for a display mount to adorn their trophy room or an athlete who competes in finishing the race to achieve a laurel crown. In the case of Rod Perry, one of 22 original sled dog competitors in Alaska’s Iditarod, another race has just begun.
Rod believes that the true story of the inaugural Iditarod race must be told in a new feature length documentary to ensure that the origins of this astounding annual event is remembered as more than just a 1,100 mile race across Alaska from Anchorage to Nome. The race epitomizes the spirit of America’s heart and soul… sled dogs, speed, endurance, intrigue, danger, courage, and comradery!
There remain only eleven mushers alive who completed the first race and Rod is just the man to tell the story to perpetuate the genesis of dog sled racing in Alaska. Join him in this next great race!
Then J.D. Duncan shares insights on three parallel races along the Iditarod trail. One describes the precursor sled dog race by delivering a life-giving Diphtheria serum over 670 miles to Nome that inspired the Iditarod. Another chronicles the current 2017 Iditarod race featuring high tech equipment along with increased speed and endurance. But the most transformational of the three is the third race assembled by Tlingit Native Alaskan and minister, Bill Pagaran. His journey across the state is to Carry the Cure of God’s love to eradicate the hopelessness of suicide especially among Alaska Native millennials.
Another adventure seeker is found in the bible known as the Apostle Paul. He tells of his quest to finish the race in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” He used the race analogy to describe the struggle to live the Christian faith, only through God’s grace to achieve the victor’s crown of eternal life! In the Christian life every believer runs his own race (1 Cor. 9:4) Paul exhorts the believer to, “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:1-2)
Then David Cabela brings the reader to the edge of his seat with a story about his hair-raising African safari experience while on a lion hunt. He learned very vividly why the lion of this deep, dark continent remains the king of the jungle.
